REVIEW

It wasn’t all that long ago when FanDuel was locked in a series of legal battles all across the country, fighting for its life as a daily fantasy sports provider. Verdict: FanDuel has won.

There were DFS wins in jurisdiction after jurisdiction, and that fight, coupled with the fight between New Jersey and the federal government that ultimately led to the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in 2018, has helped turn FanDuel into one of the giants of the American sports betting industry.

Founded in 2009 by a group of people who hoped to change the way we played fantasy sports, FanDuel has expanded to sports betting. So, when Colorado sports betting went live on May 1, 2020, FanDuel was there. On day one, like in so many other states, it was leading the way. Both in the speed in which it came to market and as a leader in sports betting innovation.

BONUSES

Sign Up and Deposit Bonus

It’s not free money, which we would prefer to see. But it is a way to get your new sports betting account off the ground. When you place your first wager with FanDuel, and that wager loses, you will be given an equal amount in betting credits, up to $500.

Your first bet automatically qualifies for this offer. If you have multiple bets on your initial betting slip, the first bet is the risk-free bet. Only losing bets will result in betting credits. And you can look for those credits to appear in your account between 24 and 72 hours after the bet is settled.

Risk-Free Bet Terms and Conditions

Betting credits received as part of this offer can only be used to place wagers and are not eligible for withdrawal.

Bonus bets only need to be wagered once, but for those wagers to be eligible, they must be placed on games with odds of -200 or shorter.

Other Bonus Offers

FanDuel targets its local markets with its sports-specific bonus offers. For example, in Colorado, if you place a preseason futures wager on the Denver Broncos to qualify for the NFL playoffs, you will receive a $5 bonus credit for each game they win during the regular season. That’s easily enough to pay for your playoff bet, and then some.

Colorado customers will find similar betting bonuses involving the Denver Nuggets and the NBA Playoffs and the Colorado Avalanche and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

FANDUEL FEATURES

It’s called Spread the Love, and it’s one of the more popular features that FanDuel rolls out from time to time. It works like this.

Let’s say the Broncos are four-point favorites against the Raiders. When Spread the Love is active in Colorado, for every 100 bettors who take the Broncos to cover, FanDuel will move the spread one point.

So if 200 bettors have the Broncos, it becomes two points. And so on, and so on. There is no limit to how much the spread can move, as evidenced by the Colts vs. Saints game last year. Thanks to Indiana bettors, the Colts were +51 in that game against New Orleans. They covered.

Bets on Spread the Love are capped at $50, for the obvious reason that Spread the Love has never lost.

Another feature that you’ll find on the FanDuel website or mobile app (available for both Android and IOS) is a daily rotating anything prop bet. And when FanDuel says anything, it means anything. The free bet may be sports, news, pop culture, or something else entirely, and it pays $5. Play every day for free, and you could win up to $50 at the end of the week.

BANKING WITH FANDUEL

Banking with FanDuel

FanDuel has done a good job of keeping its banking consistent across the many states in which it operates, and the different products that it offers. So if you’ve used FanDuel for daily fantasy sports, or had an account in a state other than Colorado, the transition is easy.

Making Account Deposits

FanDuel offers a wide range of possible deposit options:

  • Online bill pay/transfer
  • Credit or debit card
  • Echeck
  • Prepaid card
  • PayPal
  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • PayNearMe (available at area 7-Eleven stores)
  • Cashier’s check

FanDuel keeps its DFS accounts separate from its sportsbook accounts, so be sure to know where your deposit is going before you make it. You cannot transfer funds between the two.

As for the deposits themselves, FanDuel prefers that online bill pay is used. It’s fast, convenient, and because there is no exchange of account numbers, it’s the safest method available.

Credit and debit cards remain the most popular way to deposit funds into a FanDuel account. But be aware that some issuing banks automatically attach a cash advance fee when the payment is made to a gambling entity. Check with your credit card before making any deposits.

Making Account Withdrawals

Withdrawing funds from your FanDuel account comes with the following options:

  • Online banking
  • Echeck
  • Prepaid card
  • PayPal
  • Personal check

Another advantage of making your deposit with online bill pay is that the process can easily be reversed for instantaneous withdrawals. All other methods of withdrawal come with processing delays.

PayPal withdrawals process within 12 hours of the request. Prepaid card withdrawals may take up to 24 hours. Echecks can take 3 to 5 business days to show up in your account. And personal checks can take between 7 and 10 days before they make it to your mailbox.

Types of Bets at FanDuel

When Colorado sports betting first launched, and the FanDuel app first began taking bets, the sports world was limited to Korean baseball and Russian table tennis. Thankfully that has passed, and there is no shortage of sports now waiting for your next wager.

Available Sports

At FanDuel you can place wagers on the following sports:

  • Aussie Rules
  • Basketball (NBA, WNBA, NCAA, and International)
  • Baseball (International and MLB)
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Football (NFL, NCAA)
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • MMA
  • Motor Racing
  • NASCAR
  • Rugby
  • Soccer (From all around the world)
  • Tennis
  • Table Tennis

It’s not quite as an extensive offering as some other sportsbooks, but there is a little something for all wagering tastes. And no matter the time of day, there is always an available sport happening live.

Available Wager Types

Some of the sports options may be lacking, but the available wager types within the sports that are offered definitely reflect FanDuel’s innovative mindset.

Naturally, there are standard single-game bets that we’re all familiar with.

  • Point Spread
  • Moneyline
  • Totals (Over/Under)

But the real magic happens when you open each game and click on “More Wagers.”

Just clicking on a single basketball game, you’re immediately taken to a “Popular” tab that includes (along with the moneyline and spread bets on each team) First Basket, Win Margin, First Basket/Winner Double, and Player Performance Doubles.

By clicking on the “Player Prop” tab for just this one game, you find nearly 25 more options to bet, including Made Threes, Rebounds, Assists, To Record a Triple Double, and individual player Points bets.

Go over to the Same Game Parlay tab, and you can combine First Basket with Win Margin, individual player Points, Rebounds, Assists, or Made Threes.

You can also place futures wagers on sports and leagues from across the world, including the winner of next year’s Super Bowl (NFL) and Grey Cup (CFL). All future golf and tennis majors are already taking bets.

You can even place a wager on the winner of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. India, England, and Australia are the three favorites.

The great thing about FanDuel and its flexibility is that any of these possible bets, from +2500 on Bangladesh to win in 2023, to the posted run lines for any Major League Baseball game, can be combined into a single parlay.

When using the FanDuel website or app, you’ll discover just how easy it is to combine picks into a parlay or round-robin using the bet slip function on the right-hand side of the screen.

You’ll also see just how easy it is to find FanDuel’s live betting options, and how responsive the app is when updating the constantly changing lines of in-play wagering.

Anyone eligible to place sports wagers in Colorado can open an account and place bets with FanDuel. According to Colorado law, you must be at least 21 years old and within the state’s borders at the time you place your wagers or make other financial transactions. You do not need to be a Colorado resident to have a FanDuel account or place bets.

Yes. The state laws that govern daily fantasy sports and sports betting are not the same, and many of the tax rates are also different. Therefore FanDuel legally has to keep their daily fantasy sports and their sports betting operations separate.

That means that you, as a FanDuel customer, will have to register for a different account for each type of gaming that you want to play. This also means that money in one account is not transferable to the other.

Not only does FanDuel offer bets for as little as $1, but it also has an entire section of its website and app called Sports Betting Training Camp. You can learn about the most basic of sports bets, betting terms, and dos and don’ts of wagering. Even if you’ve never stepped into a sportsbook or placed a single sports wager, you can wager with confidence at FanDuel.
